For a custom storage installation in a downtown Chicago condo, ask building management about delivery routes, elevator reservations, work hours and required installer documents before setting the project schedule. Requirements differ by building. A clear contact and a written access checklist help turn those requirements into a workable plan.
Find the person who can confirm the rules
Start with the property manager or other building contact responsible for contractor access. A neighbor’s experience can be a useful prompt, but the current written requirements for your own building are the best starting point. Ask which rules apply specifically to cabinetry delivery and installation.
Share that contact information with your project team. If the building needs documents reviewed before work can begin, find out who receives them and how approval is communicated. Keeping the conversation in one place makes it easier to identify an unresolved requirement before the scheduled visit.
Trace the delivery route from the street
Describe where a vehicle can stop and how materials reach the unit. A front entrance, loading area, service corridor and parking garage can have different access arrangements. Confirm which route the building permits for this work instead of assuming the most convenient entrance is available.
Photograph tight corners, doorways and changes in level along that route where permitted. Include the unit entrance and any interior turn between it and the installation room. These details allow the installer to discuss the delivery approach alongside the size and handling of the proposed components.
Ask how elevator reservations work
Check whether a service elevator must be booked and whether delivery and installation require separate reservations. Ask about the available reservation period and any procedure for late arrival or a change of date. Do not treat an appointment requested through a website as an approved building reservation.
If management asks for dimensions or handling information, pass that request to the installer. The inside of the elevator is only one part of the route. Door openings, loading access and the turn into the corridor may also matter to the plan.
- Who books and confirms the elevator?
- Which entrance should the installer use?
- Are protective materials or specific access arrangements required?
- Who should be contacted if the delivery time changes?
Confirm paperwork and working hours
Some buildings request insurance documentation, contractor registration or other information before allowing work. Ask for the exact current requirements and where they should be sent. The building decides what it requires, and the project team needs an opportunity to review those requests.
Ask about permitted work hours, restrictions on noisy tasks and whether there are particular dates when work cannot take place. Include any relevant rules in the scheduling conversation. A plan that fits the room also needs enough permitted time to complete the agreed work.

Prepare the unit around the installation room
Inside the home, plan where the room’s existing contents will go and how to keep a clear path from the entrance. Discuss whether furniture needs to move and who is responsible for moving it. Let the team know about fragile items near the route before installation day.
Clarify the scope for existing shelves, rods or other fitted elements. Removal, wall repair, painting and electrical changes should each be discussed if relevant. Their inclusion should be established in the project plan so access arrangements match the work actually being scheduled.
Give the consultation an access summary
Bring a few room photos, your building contact, the access instructions and any dates you hope to work around. You can begin the conversation before every detail is settled, as long as pending building approvals are clearly identified.
